When I decided to start Project Life, I had to decide how to start. What time period did I want to start with? What would the focus of my album be? What format should my album be? Who knew there were so many decisions that had to be made before even printing out a single picture!
I finally sat down and worked out a plan for my very first album. I decided that my album would be a 'family' album, documenting our little family's life. So the first pages of this album show pictures from the weekend when Melissa and I first started hanging out. This weekend was a fun getaway at a mutual friend's house on the bay. We didn't exactly meet at this point, since we actually went to high school together. But we never really knew each other until that one weekend. And the rest is history! I had both Melissa and I write our memories of that weekend on journaling cards so they would stay with us forever.
Before I walk too far down memory lane, let me get into showing you guys what went into making this layout. I kept it pretty simple, because I can easily overwhelm myself by trying to go the whole nine yards (its nine right? not ten yards?) right out of the gate, then getting frustrated when I'm not a pro after my first try. So for the title card, I simply used a stencil and traced the date onto a 4x6 card.
I used my favorite Staedtler triplus fineliner pens to fill in the letters. Since they write so smoothly, I didn't have a problem getting a nice clean edge for the letters. I also knew they wouldn't bleed or show through the other side of the card, which is very important.
I really wanted to use this one card which had "Life is an adventure" written on it, but I didn't need the extra journaling lines it had below the quote. So instead of trying to find another card to use, I simply embelished the one I wanted and expanded the quote.
I simply put some washi tape over the provided journaling lines, then added my ending to the quote using my label maker. I love how much more applicable the quote is to my layout with that little addition!
Besides the start of a beautiful love story, there was also another big milestone that is worth remembering from that weekend. Dakota took her first swim! She was still a brand new puppy at that point (she was so tiny!) and I took the opportunity to teach her to swim.
To make the card, I simply applied some silver glittery letter stickers to a 3x4 card, and embellished with a little paw print stamp I have been waiting for a reason to use. I was so proud of my munchkin being so brave (sort of) and swimming all on her own. And now I can remember that moment whenever I flip through my album. Dakota was also a big part in her mom's getting together. Melissa just couldn't get enough of her, and so we ended up spending most of the weekend together. Here's to the undeniable draw of a 1lbs ball of fluff!
The last two cards are my absolute favorite of this layout. I included two QR codes, attached with washi tape onto two 3x4 cards. When scanned, these codes will take 'the viewer' to videos of Dakota's first swims with each of her moms.
I can't take credit for this brilliant idea, I picked it up in the ABFOL Project Life Facebook group. I had never thought I could include videos in memory albums before. Mind just so completely blown. Especially with a dog (and I'm guessing kids too) many of the best memories are captured on video. And I am so excited now that I can easily incorporate those videos into my albums!
Now that I have my first layout finished, I am so excited to get started on the rest of my pictures. I have about 150 pictures already selected and printed, just waiting for me to play. Can't wait to show you how they all turn out!
I'd love to hear if you have any other Project Life bombshells to drop, like it's possible to include videos in photo albums. I'm always looking for new ideas and things to add into my layouts! Let me know in the comments.
