DIY Magnetic Spice Rack Letters

Ok, so remember my magnetic spice rack?  I left it off looking like this, exactly 1 year and 1 day ago.

And that is pretty much how it has look for the past year.  Still completely unused.  I'm on top of things over here.  Well, I decided that a year is long enough to procrastinate on finishing a project, so I've decided to jump back in and finish her up.

The main thing that was really bothering me about my spice rack was how bland and boring it was.  Basically, it was a big metal eyesore in my kitchen.  I wanted to add some color and some fun to it, and here is what I came up with:

Basically, I cut the letters for 'Spices' out of foam core poster board, and then painted them a pretty green to match my kitchen colors.

It's a little hard to see, but I also painted the edges of each letters yellow, for a little extra color surprise.  We had these letters made and painted for maybe 6 months, but only just put them up this week.  The reason for this was we couldn't figure out how we wanted to get them hung.

For some reason, I got stuck thinking they had to be hung on the wall.  But I wasn't really sold on how that would work or look, so I stalled.  Then the "duh, why didn't I think of that sooner?" moment hit.  It's a magnetic spice rack.  So we stuck some magnets of the back of each letter and called this project done!

I don't know why the simplest solutions always take me the longest to figure out.  It's like I try to make things harder for myself!  Now that I finally got these letters hung up, I am so pleased with how they turned out.  They really add a nice punch of color and some much needed fun to that area.  Now to just add labels to the containers so this baby can be put to use!
