Hello everyone! Today I'm finally sharing with you a project I've had in the line up for a couple of weeks. If you follow me on Instagram, you may remember me sharing this picture:
This was a rotating spice rack that I picked up from Goodwill a couple of years ago. Up until recently it lived on my vanity, holding various odds and ends I use for prettying myself. However, I didn't love the spice rack there. It was always more of a pain to get what I needed than I wanted, it took up too much room on the limited surface, and the things I stored in it I didn't use often enough to warrant being stored out like they were.
I knew this guy had oodles of organizational potential, so I brainstormed where it may be put to better use. I finally realized the need for such an organizer on my desk. I didn't really have a good spot for all my tiny office supplies, like paper clicks and extra staples. And let me tell you, I love my spice rack a million times better in its current position.
It now holds all my tiny office doodads neatly in one place instead of scattered all over different spots of my desk. I also love that it is within arms reach, so I don't have to go digging around in various pencil cases shoved in the way back of a cubby for a single paper clip.
To help make my caddy a little less spice rack and a little more organizer, I finally removed the stickers on top with various spices labeled on them. I did this using nail polish remover and cotton balls. It wasn't the quickest task ever, but it was worth it to finally have those labels removed.
I also added a little color by lining the top of each jar with washi tape. It definitely adds a nice touch of fun to another wise pretty boring and bland caddy.
I am just so smitten with this, and so glad I finally decided to make good use of my spice rack. When I originally bought it, I was so eager to just fill it up I didn't really think about where it would be most useful. And after way longer than it should have taken, I'm so glad I finally got around to really putting this to good use. Now all my tiny office supplies are just a twirl away!
And I just love that I was able to find such an awesome organizational tool from something that was meant to store something else. My favorite projects are creating new storage systems and uses from something that was never meant to be used for that purpose!
Have you found a new use for something in your house? Or have you found something you've had in one place forever works so much better somewhere else? Let us know in the comments!
This is genius! I am going to keep my eye out for a spice rack at Goodwill! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Julia! Good luck finding one, shouldn't be too hard :)
DeleteI have this same rack but with gross old spices in it just sitting there...so excited for this! I think if I left the tops off the top track you could organize your pens there too. Especially since in the Facebook planners addicts page they all have the coolest pens :-) I obsess on that page also!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea with the pens!! I love that :) I would love to see how yours turns out if you end up doing this!
DeleteHow cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the share!
